The SAT has changed a lot. It's digital, it's adaptive, and the rules around which schools require the SAT keep changing. Success on it isn't about how smart you are. It's about how well you perform on the SAT. Here's why it still matters and how the test actually works.
Why the SAT still matters
The SAT may be optional at some colleges, but not at all of them.
1. Schools are bringing it back
Some colleges require standardized test scores. Check each school's current admissions policy before you apply.

Some of that is self-selection. Strong students are more likely to submit. But internal task-force studies at Cornell, Dartmouth, and Yale all found the same thing: even after accounting for self-selection, submitting a score meaningfully increases your odds.
3. What research says about scores and college success
Opportunity Insights at Dartmouth measured how well each signal predicts how students actually do in college:

The SAT predicts college performance more than twice as well as the transcript does. That's why selective schools are coming back to it, and why the equity argument has flipped. Dartmouth and Yale said openly in 2024 that going test-optional was hurting first-generation and low-income students: without scores, admissions had to lean even more heavily on essays, recommendations, and extracurriculars, which are the areas where higher-income students have the biggest advantage.
Bottom line
The SAT is not an intelligence test. It's a performance test.
High scorers aren't smarter than everyone else. That's not what the data shows. They've learned the format, learned the common question types, learned the traps the SAT uses, built timing habits, and reviewed their mistakes. Those are all trainable.
A 2017 College Board / Khan Academy study of nearly 250,000 test-takers found that students who put in focused, consistent practice on Khan Academy gained an average of ~115 points. The score isn't a fixed measure of ability. It responds to time and effort, applied to a learnable test.
How the digital SAT works
You probably know the basics from College Board, so we'll keep this short.
- Two sections: Reading & Writing and Math. Each scored 200–800. Total possible: 400–1600.
- Each section has two modules. The first module mixes easy, medium, and hard questions. How you do on the first module determines what the second module looks like.
Adaptive testing
Score well on Module 1 and you get the harder Module 2, which is the only path to a top score. Score lower and you get the easier Module 2. Even if you ace every question on the easier Module 2, you'll cap out around the 600s for that section.
What this means
Why Module 1 matters disproportionately
Your first objective is to land in the harder Module 2. Many students focus only on hard questions and overlook accuracy on easier Module 1 questions. Missing those questions can keep you out of the harder Module 2.
Common SAT myths

"The SAT measures intelligence."
It measures performance on a specific set of skills under specific conditions. None of those skills are IQ.

"You can't improve very much."
Score gains are normal. Students who practice strategically routinely add 100 to 200+ points.

"Taking lots of practice tests is enough."
Practice without review is just repetition with confidence. The review is where the gain comes from.

"I'm bad at standardized tests, there's nothing I can do."
Test-taking is a skill. Skills get better with practice. That's literally the definition.
